Belogradchik in the north-western tip of Bulgaria is set in a spectacular landscape of sandstone cliffs (cf. The Formation of Mountains) that is like Saxon Switzerland in Germany or Meteora in Greece. Above the village is a fortress that includes some of the most bizarre rock formations. The view from the fortress rock is definitely worthwhile. Immediately behind the car park of the fortress is another good vantage point next to the astronomical observatory. The main road to the south is also worth a stop or two.
