The image of the crusader castle Krak des Chevaliers has been in my mind ever since I stumbled across it in a picture book as a child. The thick walls and towers were never actually stormed, rather the garrison gave up because it became too stupid for them in the midst of Arab armies. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like for the Europeans who came here with the crazy idea of conquering the Holy Land. It’s also hard for me to think away all the modern buildings speckling the surrounding hills, and the remnants of a concert lying around everywhere like stage parts, chairs and toilet bowls….
