Among all the beauties of the Cordillera Blanca (cf. The Formation of Mountains), Nevado Pisco is not the most impressive, yet it is rightly one of the most popular peaks in the area: not only is it relatively easy to climb and harmless, it also has one of the best views. After a night climb, I stand with my mountain guide on the 5752 m summit just in time for sunrise.
On one side, the three oppositely inclined peaks of the beautiful Huandoy shine out, to the south the huge double peak of Huascaran and opposite, like a fortress, Chacraraju. From this rock fortress stretches a whole series of pyramids of ice, including Artesonraju and Alpamayo. And below me, a tangle of crevasses. However, the wind soon drives us down again and by the afternoon we are back in Huaraz.
